Australian authorities have decided to shut borders of two most populous states to halt the coronavirus for the first time in the last 100 years.

The border between Victoria and New South will be shut down soon. Last time the movement restricted was back at the time of Spanish flu. The number of coronavirus in Victoria’s capital Melbourne surged in recent days. Therefore, the authorities enforced strict social-distancing orders in 30 suburbs and put nine public housing towers into complete lockdown.

The state recorded 127 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours. Moreover, the death toll of the country raised to 105 in total. This move will affect the Australian economy to a large extent. Since, Victoria’s only other internal border, with South Australia state, is already closed.

However, there is no fixed time for the reopening of the border. Also, the military will take charge of the place to avoid illegal crossings. The state line is highly porous, with 55 roads, wilderness parks, and rivers. Many other businesses are also being affected by the closing.

Australia has controlled the spread of the disease so far in comparison to other countries. However, cases in Melbourne took a swift. The country has reported an average of 109 cases daily over the past week, compared with an average of just 9 cases over the first week of June.

Authorities are still concerned over the spread of the outbreak. Because no such uniform health measures are being implemented in the region. Kensington is one of the 30 suburbs that have reimposed social distancing measures. The nine public housing blocks are in neighboring North Melbourne and Flemington under complete lockdown.
