Facebook has temporarily blocked the hashtag calling Modi to resign over mishandling of the pandemic.

Facebook hid 12,000 posts mentioning Modi to resign immediately for not able to control the pandemic. India is going through the worst time dealing with COVID. The country is reporting the highest number of cases daily.

Facebook users based in India noted on Twitter that the hashtag #ResignModi had been blocked from view on Facebook. Users searching the hashtag were given a message that said such posts were “temporarily hidden here” because “some content in those posts goes against our Community Standards”.

The spokesperson said that the hashtag has been banned on the orders of the Indian government. Moreover, it will only be restored once they get permission to do so.

The blocking of the #ResignModi hashtag comes after Twitter faced criticism for deleting more than 50 tweets critical of the Indian administration’s handling of the pandemic after a legal request by the Indian government. Facebook and Instagram had already blocked several posts about Modi on the orders of the government, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The US, India’s ally, has promised to “rapidly deploy” aid to healthcare workers in India with vaccine manufacture. It has also vowed to provide extra help to India in time of need.
