Hong Kong police have arrested a senior Apple Daily journalist while leaving the city.

The journalist was a staff member of the newspaper who has been detained for violating national security law. The arrests have sent a chill across the industry, with reports on Monday of some outlets receiving anonymous threats. Another news site, Stand News, took down all published opinion pieces.

The police agency gave reasoning for the arrest of the journalist, saying that he was involved in a conspiracy with foreign countries to endanger national security. Last week, the newspaper company faced huge criticism, as a result, it has to shut down its office. All the assets of the company are being frozen by the state. The Hong Kong Journalists Association condemned the police for targeting journalists.

The measures were taken to protect the website’s supporters, writers, and editorial staffers in the “literary inquisition” of Hong Kong, Stand News said in a statement. Stand News is a popular online news outlet that formed in the wake of the 2014 Umbrella movement.

Directors and other high officials also stepped down for raising pro-democracy slogans. The funds have been cut off because of the suspicion in connection to the crime. The government and police denied the claims.
