Messi has won Ballon d’Or 21 claiming the trophy for the seventh time.

The win was a long-run battle against the rival Ronaldo. The list showed the top 30 nominees who were then reduced to three, and Messi emerged as a winner.

It is the first international trophy for Messi at the club level. Barcelona finished third in La Liga and fell in the first knockout round of the Champions League. However, Messi scored two goals as Barca won the Copa del Rey final and he was La Liga’s top goalscorer once more, before switching to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

Further awards went to Gianluigi Donnarumma for the Yashin Trophy of best goalkeeper, and another new award went to Chelsea for Club of the Year for their on-pitch achievements with both men’s and women’s teams.

The decision has been criticized by the other rival footballers especially Ronaldo. However, the decision was on merit and Messi deserved it, as per the organizers. He scored a record 41 Bundesliga goals in the 2020-21 season and is leading the charts again this season with 14 goals from 13 games. Ronaldo also gave his best but could not defeat Messi with a minimal margin.
