Moderna CEO has said that there is a likelihood that the existing vaccines will not work against Omicron.

The new omicron variant is now declared as a high-risk variant with a high transmissibility rate with an increased chance of severe disease. However, the Moderna CEO has said that all the existing vaccines might not work properly against the new variant. The underlying reason is that the virus is made up of many mutations hence new vaccines would be required to cater to it.

The new variant was detected first in South Africa last week and it is now spreading with speed all over the world. The WHO has also declared it as a dangerous virus. All the countries including the US, UK, and many other European states have restricted air travel in fear of the virus.

The scientists have taken a few samples to investigate the variants so that new vaccines could be made to cater to it.

The two earlier Dutch infections also came before South Africa first reported the new strain on November 24 to the World Health Organization, which has designated Omicron a variant of concern.
